A Moral Dilemma

From Scott AdamsThe Dilbert Blog comes an entry about Praying for Sick People, pointing out a study “to assess the benefits of praying for heart bypass patients. It turns out that that the prayed-for group didn’t do any better than the non-prayed-for people. In fact, the people who knew they were being prayed for actually did a little worse.” [emphasis mine]
Meanwhile, wife of recovering film critic Roger Ebert is asking us, in this entry in her husbands blog, “to pray for Roger during his period of recovery and to visualize him being enveloped in healing light. ”
I want him to get better, so maybe I should skip the praying. It’s not worth the risk. She also suggests he’d want us to go to the movies. Nobody has done a study on that, as far as I know. Should be safe.

Sensational Attention Grabbing Headline

According to this article (link to external site), a certain company (link to the company’s site) is all set to buy or sell-off or merge with this other company (link to their site), which may or may not affect users of this product or service (link to product or service page).
Time will tell what the future holds for that product, but the blogosphere is abuzz with plagiarized speculation and ill-formed ideas bereft of confirmation.
Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

David Attenborough: The Lyrebird

DevilDucky – David Attenborough: The Lyrebird

A Lyrebird is either of two species of ground-dwelling Australian birds, most notable for their extraordinary ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment.

Geotagging Flickr

I’ve been playing with a fun little mashup between Flickr and Google Maps called geotagging. It actually has wider implications beyond this, into GPS and so on, but the Flickr connection is what drew me in. Let’s say I have a photo on Flickr, like this one:
130-3037 Thompson R. meets Fraser R.What I can do is go to a tool like BeeLoop geotagr or YUAN. CC Maps and navigate their implementaion of Google Maps to the location where the photo was taken. Then you copy and paste the tags from geotagr, or better, let Yuan CC Maps automatically update your tags in Flickr, including putting a link in the description so that others may also find the location. Very cool. You can even see on the satellite view the two tones of the water where the rivers meet.
